Brake Pads and Alignment

Should one get an alignment after changing brakes?  There is some debate as to this question.  Numerous factors will affect the wear and lifetime of brake pads and rotors including but not limited to:

  • how often and how aggressively the brakes are applied,
  • the mileage driven,
  • the effective operation of the brake calipers,
  • the quality of the installation,
  • the quality of the brake pads and rotors themselves and
  • the alignment of the vehicle.

Poor wheel alignment can accelerate tire wear, reduce fuel efficiency, strain suspension components, reduce braking and handling ability and increase wear on brake pads and rotors.

Therefore it is important to ensure your wheels are properly aligned after changing brake pads and rotors.
